First things first, I love the length of these books. This one a solid 429 pages! Yay! In a world where most novels or series a a measly <300 page sitch, the authors here are extremely generous with their gifts! I've read this book and every other in the series 3 times. I love the experience! The plot, and the characters who are whole and complete: full of life and personal traits that are relatable, as well as Aurora's family being the most gosh darn perfect cement to harness the whole deal, all throughoffering a grounding point for both the characters and the reader. I want to join her chaotic, wacky and lovable fam ( it's awesome to have a peek inside a family who are proud to raise their kids in a healthy environment, full of acceptance, generous with those who are outside of their immediate family, and teaching their kids to be simply the best person they can be, just as they are). I love that we have here a true heroine who kicks butt, is hilarious, clumsy, snores, and gets messy: her imperfections make her a real girl. I totally dig the entry point of demons as depicted in the first few pages - it makes for a natural plot rather than just dumping her gift on us awkwardly mid read. Kudos to the authors for digging right in, saving us the turmoil that awkwardly might have potentially occured if we had to teen-angsty come to terms with the main character but nope: rather, it just IS! Love it! I highly recommend this series. In fact I'm getting a friend her first kindle for Xmas and will be loading this series on it for her prior to gift wrapping!Tags : Amazon.com: Demons at Deadnight: The Divinicus Nex Chronicles: Book One (Volume 1) (9781467984331): A & E Kirk: Books,A & E Kirk,Demons at Deadnight: The Divinicus Nex Chronicles: Book One (Volume 1),CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform,1467984337,Fantasy - General,Children's BooksAll Ages,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Fantasy & Magic,JUVENILE FICTION Fantasy & Magic,JUVENILE FICTION Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Juvenile FictionParanormal, Occult & Supernatural,Paranormal,Science fiction (Children's Teenage),YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Young Adult Fiction Fantasy General,Juvenile Fiction Paranormal,Non-Classifiable
Demons at Deadnight The Divinicus Nex Chronicles Book One Volume 1 A E Kirk Books Reviews
Wow. This story is action-packed. Almost too much action, but still a really good read. I liked the snarky heroine and the Hex boys. There is mention that the heroine has a large family, but they hardly make a appearance, so I wonder why the authors even included it in the storyline since she has very little interaction with her parents or siblings.
It was never really explained why she didn't tell her parents or family (not even her sister(s)) about her supernatural talents. It seems odd that she didn't share it with anyone. I mean when it first started happening, you'd think she rush to tell her family because realistically, you'd think you were going crazy.
And she never mentions if she had any friends or even a best friend at her old school, and she doesn't make any new friends (besides the Hex boys) at her new school. Not one female friend, which seems odd for a teen girl.
Some of dialogue punctuation and tags were incorrect, but didn't distract too much from the storyline. There are quite a few funny lines that made me smile.
I only wish there was a bit more characterization and romance...
I am writing this with mixed feelings. I really enjoyed the story and characters, but I cannot express how distracting the writing style is. I'm convinced I would really like the author if I met them in person. It's clear that they write the way they think (sarcastically and hurriedly). There are a lot of thoughts that go onto the page, but they aren't necessarily cohesive, which was very distracting for most of the novel. I enjoyed the hell out of the characters, especially Ayden, and thought Aurora was a fun, fiery heroine.
My only star removed was for two things. The first is that Ayden/Aurora were a bit unbelievable as a couple. It happened very quickly, there was very little buildup to their romance, and Ayden was a little stalkerish (reminiscent of twilight.. / ). The second was the odd writing/pacing I mentioned above.
Overall, a fun paranormal/romance story with plenty of laughs.
So this was actually the first book that I read in 2018 I've just been terribly terrible at getting around to writing a review for it. And honestly? It has set the bar pretty dang high for the rest of the books that I read this year, and has made me ask questions like
Why is this such an unappreciated book? (much like Red Winter by Marie Annette)
How can I get this book more love that it so rightly deserves?
Why haven't I heard of this series before? (It's been out for 6 years and I'm just now reading it. SIX. YEARS.)
Why does Matty have such an extreme dislike for Aurora??!?
I very very very much enjoyed reading this book. It had everything I liked; paranormal factors, action, romance, a clumsy kick butt heroine who could take care of herself and will do anything for her friends/family but also trips over nothing, so there's that... More than one super swoony male character. I wouldn't call it a love... whatever shape all those people make because she only shows "real" interest to one of the guys, a super awesome cat named Van Helsing, quirky guardians, character building, story building, and and and... lots of other things. Like how there was something LOL-worthy on almost every page. There were a lot of twists and turns, betrayals, revelations, etc...
I loved Aurora and how relatable she was, she was funny and said some things that made me want to cover my face. I love how amazing her family is. There's so much love and support going on there, and it just makes me smile.
I adore the boys. Have I said that yet? They are amazing. They're all so protective of Aurora, and they're also so dang funny it hurts. Not to mention how beautiful they are, and how well they work together.Yes, I even like Matthias, even though he can be a douche canoe.
It definitely wasn't perfect. There were some plot holes, and parts of it seemed like it jumped around without explanation, and I thought that I had missed something so I went back and re-read it to try and figure it out, but no, that's just how it was written.
But obviously that didn't take away anything from it. Because I still loved this book to bits and pieces. It was just like, I don't know, it hit me in all the feels, and just made me so happy while I was reading it. I am trying not to spoil anything, especially since I have finished all the available books in the series, and I don't want to accidentally talk about something that comes later on. But oh my gosh, it gets better and better with each book.
I can't wait to see how Aurora's powers develop, and what other hijinks she gets herself into.
