My daughter loves this book primarily because she is obsessed with birds and pretends her school is "flight school." It appeals to kids with all types of learning disabilities, even though it is obvious (to an adult) thatvthe pigeon has dyslexia. The message at the end is a good one as it makes clear that you can be really good at some things but may need tools and extra work in other areas. My only dislike is that some of the language (for the sake of rhyming) is beyond the level of my second-grader.

Don Winn's book, "The Higgledy-Piggledy Pigeon," from the Cardboard Box Series, brings another valuable story to children.

Hank is a young pigeon who finds that he succeeds in every part of flight school except for his sense of direction. He asks for help from a horse and a snail, and neither can help him. The crafty raccoon is willing to show him the route if he gives him his flight cap. Hank returns to the class defeated, embarrassed in front of his classmates, and cap-less. His heartbreak is soon healed when the teacher praises other parts of his performance and gives him a compass for guidance. Hank moves to the head of the class, earning an "A."

In this story, Winn's message is that dyslexia, or any other learning problem, does not have to stand in the way of a child in school. Hank's story lets children know that we all have challenges and need "compasses" in life (tutoring, help in deciding how we behave with friends). The story reminds parents that while children may develop certain learning skills more slowly than others do, they are not necessarily limited for life. As Winn says in the Introduction, "Albert Einstein couldn't read `til he was nine, but look what he accomplished once he did!"
It is no secret that Don Winn’s children’s books were created to prepare children for the challenges they will face throughout their lives, and his picture book Higgledy-Piggledy Pigeon is a great example and execution of just that. In the story, we meet a pigeon on his first day of flight school. However, the exciting day turns disappointing when the protagonist pigeon fails to grasp all of the lessons as quickly as his classmates. He ends up failing a portion of his final test, but thanks to an encouraging and patient teacher, the pigeon is able to learn everything he needs to know to quickly rise to the top of his class. Throughout life, and especially grade school, everyone is bound to come across a subject that is difficult to grasp. And having been previously exposed to the temporary struggles of the Higgledy-Piggledy Pigeon can be the difference in a child giving up on the difficult subject or persevering and succeeding at every tasks that comes his or her way. This is a must-read for all children who are about to enter school.
This story skirts around the issue of dyslexia. The word is never used and it's a stretch to assume kids will make the connection between a bird flying and academics. The book does not offer any strategies on learning or performance. Research has shown that disability awareness is a common trait among successful students and adults with LD. Books that help with self awareness need to tackle the issue head on. 'LD' and 'dyslexia' are not shameful words; it's very hard to solve a problem if you don't have the words to describe it.

I love this little book. It is a good rounded book encouraging ALL kids with any fault, weakness, or learning disability...(all of us!) to accept it, get help for it if you need to and then GO ON with what you want to do in life... NOT to get down or pity yourself. It is excellent and well-rounded.
What a fun, encouraging book! This would appeal to any child who is facing struggles that can not be overcome without help. It centers around a carrier pigeon with no sense of direction. And since directional skill is supposed to be the strong suit of carrier pigeons, he feels like a failure. But he has a good teacher, who assesses his needs and gives him tools to help him cope. It offers hope to kids who are struggling or falling behind, that with the right tools, understanding, and persistence, we can all succeed.
