I don't always agree with Caitlin Moran, but I'm completely in love with her writing. With fierce, filthy, clever humor, she tells the semi-autobiographical story of a nerdy fat girl who tries to reinvent herself after completely humiliating herself on national TV (thank goodness for her this happened before the days of YouTube). As she descends into the world of rock and roll journalism, she finds a freedom she never realized but also starts to lose herself. I can't tell you how enjoyable this book was to read, and I finished it off in two days. Not bad for someone who works 12-hour shifts! It had been a while since I got my hands on a book that was so much fun to read.

A naughty naughty read....thoroughly entertaining. I wanted the book for the cover...not going to lie. I got so much more from it. Caitlin Moran is a writing beast and I am so excited to read all her other books thanks to this amazing book. She does not hold back and she tells it like it is...that's what makes her so addictive.
The book does have some strong points, as it takes place during the best part of the best decade with the best music ever made. So that's a plus and the music references are good. However, it is very British and some of the words and references, not music related, are a little off. Still not sure what this word "whilst" means are even how to pronounce it! And it turns up a lot. Beyond that it's a solid 1st effort novel and it flew by, read it in a week on A couple of work trips while on the plane or sitting in the hotel room. There was only one chapter were I started to skim and not read, one of the Rich heavy chapters about 3/4 the way through. So if you are a Teen/20 something of the 90s and remember the 1st time you heard Jane's Addiction Nothings Shocking, I recommend the book.
Not for the faint-hearted, but this is touching and, to the extent that a foreigner (U.S.) of the opposite gender can tell, an honest account of the unique path one girl took while growing up poor in England. Compelling very hard not to read in one sitting.

It is also (as I see it) very wryly humorous in parts, without straining for that effect. I suppose for Brits it might be more dramatically funny, but even over here, it's got plenty of humorous scenes. Tinged with a bit of sadness, but never maudlin.

Really only the main character is fully developed, but so thoroughly so that the other characters seem just fine.
I love, love, LOVED this book! What a great surprise! It was a recommendation on my , so I thought, "Why not?" and I'm so glad I bought it! There were parts that literally made me laugh out loud... in a public place... and I didn't care. Not only do we ROOT for Dolly Wilde (what a great name... and what a great way that she came up with the name), but we equally pity her and cheer her on, while sometimes slightly cringing -- in much the way that a big sister would-- when you read about certain decisions that she makes and certain misperceptions that she creates. But you LOVE Dolly, and you are so glad that she is loved and that she owns what she is becoming... but she is very aware of what is real about her persona and what is definitely an act.

The writing is stellar, and the editing is fabulous too. I love the vocabulary, the metaphor, and the overall VIBE of this book. (If you read and appreciate either Christopher Moore or Tom Robbins, you will love this writing style.) I have recommended this book to many friends, and I may even re-read it. "How to Build a Girl" was my first taste of Caitlin Moran, and I look forward to reading more.
The plot Johanna, 14 years old, is from a poor working class family in a dying industrial city in England. She has few friends, a quirky family (alcoholic, rock star wannabe dad; postpartum depressed mom), and is self-conscious about her appearance and the fact that she's never been kissed. As an avid reader and student of pop culture, she reinvents herself as Dolly Wilde, music critic and "sexual adventurer." We follow Johanna/Dolly through age 17 in her (mis)adventures with booze, sex, and the world of alternative music.

This book is seriously funny, thanks to Johanna's way with words, and her lack of a filter. If you like raunchy humour, British pop culture references, and vulnerable and flawed adolescent narrators, this is your book! But, it's absolutely not for anyone who is put off by dirty words and over-sharing around sexual experiences. Personally, I appreciated the candour and laugh out loud moments. I was always routing for Johanna, even when she showed terrible judgement. Recommended!
Even as a formerly awkward teenaged girl, I found it hard to empathize with the main character. She was completely unappealing, and frankly came off as a bit mentally challenged. The best part of the book was the protagonist's reaction to her well-endowed hookup. There were laugh out loud moments. Then it spun into a ridiculous and unrealistic scene. That was a main flaw of the novel. The writer takes things too far. If Johanna/Dolly and the situations she got herself into were slightly less ridiculous, the book would have been more enjoyable. And she stayed ridiculous until the end.
This is just a truly excellent novel-- one that I've been lobbing at people, insisting that they read it, ever since I finished it (in fact, I recommended it to one person yesterday and on a website today). Moran ranges from witty to doubled-over-laughing hilarious-- but she can also make a dead-serious point. I never expected this to be a book I'd end up underlining passages in, but there are absolutely things I want to be able to find easily. She never slams you in the head with a moral, like some teen-type books do; she lets it sneak up on you. The wonderful blend of music that weaves through the text was just excellent. People who are adverse to drugs, sexuality, and four-letter words aren't going to adore this one, I should probably say.

One suggestion for improvement make a Spotify list to go along with it!
