I loved this book! I loved feeling like I was being taken somewhere I've never been, and getting an understanding of a culture I know relatively little about. The descriptions of Odessa are fantastic, as well as the characterization of it's citizens and their culture. Daria is wonderful - smart and beautiful. l was equally invested in the other characters - Boba, Harmon, Jane and Vlad - even that putz Tristan seem like real people. I felt the story sagged a bit when the setting moved to America, but it fit the story. All plots are not resolved at the end of the book which is frustrating to me, unless the author writes a sequel, in which case I will be first in line to buy it!Tags : Moonlight in Odessa: A Novel [Janet Skeslien Charles] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b> A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian </i>meets Desperate Housewives </i>in this exploration of the booming business of Russian e-mail-order brides,Janet Skeslien Charles,Moonlight in Odessa: A Novel,Bloomsbury USA,1596916729,Dating services;Fiction.,Man-woman relationships;Fiction.,Odesa (Ukraine);Fiction.,AMERICAN FIRST NOVELISTS,Contemporary Women,Dating services,FICTION Women,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction-General,Former European Soviet States,GENERAL,General Adult,Man-woman relationships,POPULAR AMERICAN FICTION,United States

Self-character-study of a Ukrainian woman trapped in her crime-ridden town without decent men or a future.
Thoroughly depressing but quite possibly accurate depiction of post-Soviet Russia, but without a real storyline. I quit about a quarter of the way through.
You almost figured it all out before you got past the first page.......the first mention of mail order brides.
I read this on my return from Odessa and although it is a novel and stretches the truth where necessary to the story, it also has a huge amount of believability based on what we saw and experienced while there. To me, the book was a mixture of a fascinating story and travel notes. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is a fantastic first novel. Charles does an amazing job of capturing the nature of Ukrainian women and modern mail-order brides. I've spent some time in Eastern Europe myself and I find that her descriptions of Ukraine and the people who inhabit it ring true. This is a fresh perspective on a lifestyle that often mystifies western women wondering why anyone would sign up for marriage to a stranger on the other side of the world. Daria is a delightful character who remains hopeful through adversity and demonstrates Charles' love and admiration for Odessa. Congratulations on an excellent debut! I can't wait to read more from this author!
I love novels set in foreign countries. I had little knowledge of Odessa, but after reading this book I could visualize this beautiful country. The first two parts of the book were interesting and I flew though them. The third part was repetitious and that is why I gave the book four stars. This book is worth reading if your interested in the mail order bride business and some of the characters are unforgettable.
Really enjoyed this book. Gave me such insight into another culture. Felt very immersed in it. Understood why main character did what she did. She was a likeable character and I really like how so many unlikable characters were written in such a sympathetic manner. Enjoyed and really felt for the characters in this book. Really loved the setting and learning more about another culture.
Daria a recent graduate with a mechanical engineering degree lives in Odessa Ukraine with her grandmother. After looking for months and finding nothing but the lowest paying jobs, Daria accepts a position as a secretary in an Israeli shipping company. The job pays many times what she can expect to earn as an engineer. She fights off her boss's advances while working hard to keep customs, the mafia and the malicious other secretaries at bay. Daria goes to moonlight at a US-Soviet matchmaking firm to give her some extra security. There she hooks up with and marries an American. This is a story about the realities of a "mail order bride" and the ups and downs of coming to the U.S.
This book reads like any good chit lit book, only perhaps a bit better written and more entertaining. I particularly liked being able to see the entire process through one of the "brides" perspective, that the husbands that seek these women are older, less attractive and perhaps just weird, hence their search for a spouse in another country. Since a brother of mine has gone to the Ukraine in search of a bride several times, it was really interesting to see the girl's side of the story. A great read!
