I had not heard of the Catwings but got the book because my grandsons love cats. We read it all in one sitting and all the boys listened and wanted more - will get the others in the series. The boys are ages 4, 7 and 8. Recommended even if you are not a cat lover! (like me) The writing reminds me of Beatrix Potter tales (not dumbed down).Tags : Catwings Return [Ursula K. Le Guin, S.D. Catwings Return Ursula K Le Guin SD Schindler 9780439551908 Books Reviews
I read this about 3 decades ago after reading Ms. LeGuinn's EarthSea Trilogy. Catwings is written for children, and is so engaging that I'll be buying the 3 books in the series to take with me so i can read it to my 6 grandchildren in a couple of months. They'll be enthralled by the lovely friendly cats with wings, and wish they could have one of their own. What would make this all perfect is if Ms. LeGuinn would contract with some toy manufacturer to have Catwings stuffed kittens!
Leguin is good at children's books too. Her way with language lets her craft lovely and gentle bedtime stories. The pictures are delightful as well.
I've been a catwings fan since I was in 2nd grade. I read all the books that were out at that time )
I'm in my mid 20's now and have a child of my own. This was a big hit and I loved reading it as an adult. I bought all 4 books and I read them as soon as they came.
Catwings is gentle story for child readers about four kittens with some special abilities and special challenges. It has a happy ending and completely inobtrusively teaches positive values. Le Guin does challenge's little readers' perceptions by having the kittens refer to adult humans as "hands." This ties back to the examination of perception more prominently featured in her literary fiction.
The illustrations are a integral part of this short book and make the book an easy and fun read; as such it is perfect for Primary School-aged readers. A variety of wild animals are featured in the narrative and illusrated as well.
On a final note, the flying-cat, albeit envisioned much larger and called a "windsteed", was explored in Rocannon's World, Le Guin's first published novel.
The only negative is that buying Catwings by itself is kind of silly - you will find yourself ordering all four books in the series. They are all most reasonably priced though.
First book of the Catwings series, by Ursula K. Le Guinn. Teaches compassion for beings that are different.

When people ask me about chapter books for young children or very early readers, I suggest this first. It's sweet and amazing. When I was teaching kindergarten, I called my kids in early from recess the week I read a chapter from Catwings at every story time, as they took more time to read than picture books. The kids, with no exception, dropped everything to run for the door so they wouldn't miss a word.
Some kids as young as 3 might appreciate it, but my kid (a book loving 2) prefers the wonderful Henry and Mudge series for chapter books. In my experience, Catwings is right for 4-adult.
I am 7 y.o. and I loved this book because it is full of adventure and surprises and the cats have wings! It takes place in a forest filled with owls and the cats are very clever.
I had not heard of the Catwings but got the book because my grandsons love cats. We read it all in one sitting and all the boys listened and wanted more - will get the others in the series.
