When High Paladin Sorin discovers the brutally dismembered body of his cousin Alfrey, a much loved priest in the royal palace, he is left baffled as to who would do so terrible a thing to so good a man. But to find the answer to that question, he must cooperate with one of the highly despised necromancers, men who practice black magic, sleep in graveyards and feed upon souls …
The necromancer Koray, however, is far from what he expected. He is beautiful, stubborn, and possessed of a tongue sharp enough to cut down even the High Paladin himself. Koray is also possessed of a strength like nothing Sorin has ever encountered, and the power of the Goddess herself.
It does not take them long to realize that solving a murder is the easiest challenge they must face, and in order to save a kingdom they must first unravel centuries of lies and misunderstandings.

While not my favorite Megan Derr book, Black magic has claim to one of my favorite characters written by her! Koray stole my heart from the first insult flung and I still smile every time I re-read it and Koray snarks at 'My Lord High Paladin' I can't help it I simply adore him! While in many books Megan Derr will take full advantage of her ability to toggle between character POVs and still have the story flow seamlessly, in this one she does so even more, and rather than just two characters we get to see the story unfold from several different character's eyes! In a few instances we even get a glimpse from side character's POVs which is something that of all the books by Megan I've read so far, can ONLY be found in this title!
This tale is a delightful fantasy, although sadly it suffers from the one flaw many of Megan's books possess, where an 'enemy' or 'villian' or even just 'bad situation' is built up and built up into this horrible thing that theres no chance of ever solving... it's then solved with relative ease leaving the characters seeming a bit melodramatic in the re-reads.
Despite this flaw it has one of the most interesting world settings, honestly I think several fantasy RPG video games could take a page from this book, and the characters are endearing and enchanting with several romances unfolding as you go.
Despite this Megan has made a truly adorable though thorny creature with her sweet and sour necromancer Koray and the relationship between him and the block headed High Paladin has made this and its short sequel 'come to me' the two most re-read books on my kindle! I think ten years from now I will still pick this book back up any time I need a reason to smile, they're THAT precious!
All-in-all if you enjoy fantasy, action, romance, and bickering-induced kisses this book should definitely be added to your collection!

Black Magic edition by Megan Derr Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
As a fan of the fanstasy genre and m/m couples, I am always looking for something that combines the two. I found out about Megan Derr, and decided to check out some of her writings. I must say I enjoyed Black Magic. It has necromancers, magic, and demons.
There are three couples in this book, the main ones being Koray and Sorin. I must say I adored Koray. Sorin was nice, too, but I wanted to smack him sometimes. Koray was adorable, but I like the angsty types, so that’s probably part of the reason I liked him so much. The other two couples were cute, too, particularly Brekk and Emel. I wish more time had been focused on them and their relationship. Their relationship was actually a key part of the story, so it would have been nice to see more of them. Neikirk and Cerant’s relationship seemed a bit sudden, though they had been together a long time. I felt this could have been a longer book, as some parts seemed rushed.
There were some typos, but they didn’t distract from the story. I felt the battle scenes could have been more descriptive, and there always seemed to be some form of dues ex machina in them, but I still enjoyed the story. The banter between Koray and Sorin was funny, and I liked the buildup of their relationship. While there was attraction there, it took time for their relationship to develop, which I prefer. When it finally does happen, it makes it that much sweeter and more rewarding.
The sex scenes the other two couples aren’t very detailed, albeit a bit crude, but the one between Sorin and Koray is sweet and tastefully done. I did think the ending was a bit rushed, as there seemed a lot that was still unsettled. Not with the characters, but with the world itself. The kingdom is facing a big transition, and while I can understand leaving some things open, I do wish there was another full novel, not just a short story (part of that is because I want more of these characters).
If you like fantasy and male/male couples, read this book. It’s suspenseful, with dark elements, sweet, and oddly addicting. Then read the short story, “Come to Me”, which is a follow-up story.
